Why We Chose the Roadrunner for Our GreenPods

Every product we create at Zona Coffee Company has a story behind it, and our Roadrunner Blend GreenPods are no exception.

When it came time to name our single-serve coffee pods, we wanted something that represented Arizona, reflected our personality, and fit the product itself. The roadrunner checked every box.

A Childhood Memory with Arizona Roots

If you grew up in the 1980s, chances are you remember spending Saturday mornings watching Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. Long before we knew anything about branding or running a coffee company, those cartoons introduced many of us to a stylized version of the American Southwest. Towering saguaro cacti, desert mesas, winding canyons and endless blue skies became the backdrop for one of television's most iconic rivalries.

Looking back, it's funny to realize that a cartoon helped create an appreciation for Arizona long before many of us ever called it home.

As we built Zona Coffee Company, we wanted our products to celebrate the state we love. Naming one of our coffees after Arizona's official state bird felt like a natural choice.

Meet the Real Roadrunner

The real roadrunner is far more impressive than most people realize.

Found throughout Arizona's deserts, grasslands, and open scrublands, roadrunners are built for life in the Southwest. While they're capable of flying, they spend most of their lives on the ground, where they can sprint at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.

That speed isn't just for show.

Roadrunners rely on quick bursts of acceleration and incredible agility to escape predators and chase down prey. Their diet includes insects, spiders, lizards, snakes, rodents, and even scorpions. They're intelligent, adaptable birds that have mastered surviving in one of the harshest environments in North America.

Despite the extreme heat, scarce water, and rugged terrain, the roadrunner doesn't just survive...it thrives.

Why the Name Fits Our Coffee

Our GreenPods were designed for people who don't have time to waste.

Some mornings, you need great coffee without the wait. Whether you're getting ready for work, heading out on an Arizona road trip, or watching the sunrise over the desert, you want a fresh cup in minutes.

That's exactly what our Roadrunner Blend represents.

Just like its namesake, our GreenPods are built to move quickly without sacrificing performance. They deliver a rich, flavorful cup while using less material than traditional plastic pods. We wanted something that fit today's busy lifestyle while still producing coffee we'd be proud to drink ourselves.

The roadrunner also represents something we admire about Arizona.

It's resilient. It's resourceful. It's unmistakably unique.

You don't confuse a roadrunner with any other bird, just as we don't want Zona Coffee Company to feel like any other coffee brand. We're proud to build an Arizona company that celebrates the people, landscapes and wildlife that make this state special.

One More Arizona Character

If you've spent any time around Zona Coffee Company, you've probably met Zona the Coyote. He's our mascot and a distant cousin of a certain cartoon coyote who spent years unsuccessfully chasing a very famous bird across the Arizona desert.

Thankfully, Zona has figured out that life is a lot more enjoyable with a great cup of coffee than with another ACME invention.

And besides... some things are simply meant to be admired from a distance.
